Also, someone talked about mIRC and the way it has a "taskbar" in the main window: That would be a great solution to this problem too. I think the Opera.ini file should be placed in the Opera directory as putting it in the Windows directory is unnecessary clutter and can cause trouble when installing several

<snip long list of clutter on Mac screen> What is this meant to prove? It doesn't say anything about how elegant the GUIs are to use. What's elegant about a pop-up folder tab which won't pop-up over an app window, thereby rendering dragging to it from an app useless? The typical Windows screen just has a taskbar

I am hopefully trying to help out other Windows programmers who think Delphi is great but that the VCL can "clutter things up" sometimes :-) MainForm Win95 Taskbar shows all forms: This leads to another issue: Delphi programs run under Win95. Actual Windows Minimizer eliminates toolbar clutter by letting you minimize any open program to an icon at the screen edge, or, if you wish, to the system tray near the clock. This is an ideal solution for programs such as browsers, e-mail, audio players or other programs running in the background that you don't

I guess the Apple menu is a more complete solution for quick access. What other application? It's that little thing on the taskbar with the little icons in it next ..... being tested or widely reported high quality on the Window platform then it warns you that it could do stupid things like clutter your start menu.

What MacOS X really is all about
That's fair enough, I can understand that you are willing to put up with screen clutter to have the ability to drag and drop to windows, although I don't understand why it is important to be able to hide windows. But I don't think that a dock/taskbar is the best solution. FinderPop doesn't take up any screen space

I've asked this previously, but no solution appeared, and I haven't come up with anything new myself. I want to create a child form with the following properties: a) But for this to make any sense, the child forms must not be "chained" to the main for, but I don't want to clutter the taskbar with their buttons,

Here's the solution in XP: Create a folder. Place Aliases of the programs you wish to see in a Taskbar grouping into this folder. Right-click the Taskbar and It's much less clutter, and more intuitive. Gnome offers that option, which is how the Mac does it as well, but I don't think Windows has that option.

If Windows hid a widget behind the Taskbar the Mac krowd would be pointing and cursing. Unfinished. Unfortunately, Carbon and Classic apps don't have much provision to receive screenspace cues or re-draw hints---I think a heavy-handed solution is called for here. I havent seen a better solution for these things: - get an overview of open windows Why do you need an overview? Surely you know what you have open? Not my reason :) It's just clutter. Bah, under KDE I set my taskbar to 'small' and it barely uses up space, even on my old laptop which has a 800x600 display.

I have to either move to desktop or open a directory for the target file: both add clutter. I *hate* the disclosure triangles, and I can't imagine why people use them, but a lot of people do. Solution to your problem: drag-scroll. Grab the item and position it at the lower edge of the window, and it scrolls down.

"Single window mode" wasn'ta good solution- it did remove most of the clutter, but left much of the screen unused. And it was an all-or-nothing mode that You can then use the tidy-looking taskbar to switch windows. It's a lot like single-window mode, if you think about it. This has a number of problems.

Exactly... I wish Name-IT would've been designed to minimize in the tray in the first place. I mean, they knew they were designing a program for Windows95 that most users were going to have running constantly in the background. Why clutter up the task bar with it?
