System 6 is very simple and has hardly any clutter, but I wouldn't want to go back to it. Most of what Mac OS X gets rid of isn't needed once you figure out the Windows taskbar, the Dock gives the user hardly any choices. If you don't want the Dock in the way, set it to autohide. That's a terrible solution IMO.

I think that the best solution is probably no desktop at all, much as it pains me. That's _kinda_ how OS X seems to solve that particular issue, in a sense. The current mechanism just seems prone to producing desktop clutter. Plus it relies on you being continuously able to see the part of the desktop involved,

I agree with this; I think XP's taskbar is a much better idea for limited screen real-estate. For 1600x1200 the dock's not a big deal and it looks nice, but for 800x600 or 1024x768 it takes a lot of room. The first thing I did was install MaxMenus so I could reduce the clutter of the dock.
